US Funding to India: USAID Leads but Other Agencies Contribute Significantly

An analysis of US funding to India between 2001 and December 2024 reveals that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has consistently been a major contributor. 1 However, other US agencies, particularly the Department of State, have also played a notable role in providing financial assistance to India.

Over the years, the total US funding to India has fluctuated, reaching peaks in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2017, 2018, and notably in 2022 and 2023. USAID's contribution has generally aligned with these trends, often constituting the majority of the total funding. For instance, in 2001, out of the total $146.3 million, USAID provided $121.6 million. This pattern of USAID being the primary funding agency continued for most years.

However, the Department of State has also made significant contributions, particularly in certain years. While its funding was relatively low in the earlier years, it saw a substantial increase in 2005 ($12.1 million), 2007 ($11.5 million), and again in later years, reaching $9.0 million in 2022 and $12.5 million in 2023. The Department of Energy's contribution has been comparatively smaller but consistent in some later years. The data up to December 2024 shows a total funding of $159.7 million, with USAID contributing $151.9 million, indicating its continued prominence in the overall US financial support to India.
