Maharashtra Leads in Number of Women Scientists in India

 Recent data reveals that Maharashtra has the highest number of women scientists in India, with 215 individuals supported by the Women Scientist Scheme between 2018 and 2024. Following closely are Delhi (214) and Uttar Pradesh (209), indicating a significant concentration of women in science in these northern and western states. Tamil Nadu (198) and West Bengal (154) also show a notable presence of women in the scientific field.

Regionally, North India accounts for the largest share of women scientists at 32.7%, closely followed by South India at 30.7%. West India contributes 13.9%, while East India accounts for 10.9%. The remaining 7.9% comes from Central India and other regions.

The Women Scientist Scheme has played a crucial role in supporting 1,962 women scientists across the country during the period of 2018 to 2024, as per data from the Ministry of Science & Technology. This highlights the ongoing efforts to promote and empower women's participation in science and technology across various states and regions in India.
