Madhya Pradesh Leads India in Forest and Tree Cover

According to data from the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Madhya Pradesh tops the list of Indian states with the largest forest and tree cover, spanning an impressive 85,724 square kilometers. This makes it the greenest state in India in terms of sheer area covered by forests and trees.

Other states with significant green coverage include Maharashtra (65,383 sq km), Arunachal Pradesh (67,083 sq km), and Chhattisgarh (62,350 sq km). Odisha also features prominently with 58,597 sq km of green cover. Southern states like Karnataka (47,033 sq km), Andhra Pradesh (35,425 sq km), and Tamil Nadu (31,821 sq km) contribute notably to India’s overall forested area.

On the lower end, Union Territories like Chandigarh (46 sq km), Delhi (371 sq km), and Lakshadweep (27 sq km) show minimal forest and tree cover, largely due to urbanization and geographic limitations.

This data underscores the critical role states like Madhya Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh play in India's ecological sustainability. As forest cover plays a key role in carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation, maintaining and expanding this green footprint is essential for India’s environmental future.
