High Expenditure on Rented Premises for Post Offices Across India
A significant number of post offices in India continue to operate from rented buildings, leading to substantial financial outlays. You would be surprised to know that Indian government has paid Rs. 963.8 crore against the rent for 18834 post offices across the nation.
According to the data tabled in Lok Sabha, as of March 31, 2024, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of rented post office premises (2,162), with an expenditure of ₹1,285.87 crore over the last decade. Maharashtra follows with ₹1,105.40 crore spent on 1,657 rented buildings, while Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal also report expenditures exceeding ₹700 crore each. Uttar Pradesh, despite having 1,971 rented post offices, has spent a relatively lower ₹721.83 crore. The data underscores the considerable financial burden of rented infrastructure, highlighting the need for long-term planning to reduce rental dependencies and develop permanent postal facilities.
