Fluctuating Export Trends of Basmati Rice to European Markets
India’s Basmati rice exports to European countries have shown significant fluctuations over the past five years. While demand for premium-quality rice remains strong, factors such as trade regulations, quality compliance, shifting market dynamics have influenced export volumes and of course the covid era. The data reveals a sharp rise in exports in post covid era, reflecting more opportunities for Indian farmers in the European market.
In 2019-20, India exported 2,94,224 metric tons of Basmati rice to Europe, which surged to 4,34,450 metric tons in 2020-21. However, exports dropped significantly to 2,53,984 metric tons in 2021-22, possibly due to stricter quality regulations or logistical challenges. The trend reversed in 2022-23, with exports increasing to 3,40,854 metric tons, and further rising to 4,26,811 metric tons in 2023-24. These fluctuations underscore the need for consistent quality control, strong trade agreements, and effective marketing strategies to stabilize and enhance India's Basmati rice exports to European markets.
Non Basmati Rise on down trend
The data indicates a sharp increase in exports from 2019-20 to 2020-21, followed by fluctuations in the subsequent years. In 2019-20, India exported 1,68,742 metric tons of non-basmati rice to Europe, which nearly doubled to 3,23,937 metric tons in 2020-21. However, the following year (2021-22) saw a decline to 2,74,365 metric tons. Exports surged again in 2022-23, reaching 3,30,789 metric tons, before dropping to 2,36,847 metric tons in 2023-24.
